Kitten Care

Start your kitten off on the right paw!

Bringing a new kitten into your home is an exciting and joyful experience. From your kitten’s first vet visit to everyday care, our team of veterinary professionals are here to help. We want to ensure they start off on the right paw and enjoy a lifetime of good health and happiness!

First Veterinary Visit

We can’t wait to meet your new kitten! From their first check-up to establishing a lifelong wellness plan, we're here to support you and your kitten every step of the way.

Your kitten’s first vet visit should be as soon as possible after you bring them home. If your kitten has seen a veterinarian prior to your adoption, it is still recommended to schedule a visit asap!

During your initial vet appointment, we will:

  • Conduct a thorough physical examination
  • Discuss and possibly administer the first round of vaccinations
  • Discuss parasite prevention, including fleas, ticks, and heartworms
  • Offer nutritional guidance for proper growth and development
  • Address any questions you have about behavior, litter training, and general care

Vaccinations
Vaccinations protect your kitten from serious diseases. We will discuss the recommended vaccination schedule to ensure your kitten is fully protected as they grow.

Parasite Prevention
Kittens are particularly vulnerable to parasites. We provide comprehensive parasite prevention plans to keep your kitten safe from fleas, ticks, heartworms, and intestinal parasites.

Spaying and Neutering
Spaying or neutering your kitten not only helps control the pet population but also offers significant health benefits. We can advise you on the best time to schedule this procedure.

Nutrition and Growth
Proper nutrition is essential for your kitten's development. We offer dietary recommendations to ensure your kitten grows up healthy and strong.

Tips for New Kitten Parents

  • Socialization: Early socialization is important for your kitten's development. Expose your kitten to different people, environments, and other pets to build their confidence and adaptability.
  • Basic Training: Basic and consistent training early helps to establish good behaviors. Start with litter box training and gentle handling to establish good habits. Use positive reinforcement to encourage desired behaviors.
  • Carrier Training: Introducing the carrier as a kitten can help make trips to the vet easier. Leave a carrier in a common area with the door open and place soft bedding and favorite toys inside to make it inviting. Gradually introduce short, positive trips in the carrier, using treats and gentle praise to create a sense of security and comfort.
  • Play Time: Engage your kitten in regular play sessions with toys that stimulate their need to hunt.
  • Dental Care: Introduce tooth brushing, with a kitten-specific toothbrush and toothpaste, early to prevent dental disease and get your kitten accustomed to proper care.
  • Grooming: Regular grooming helps keep your kitten looking his/her best. Brush regularly to keep the coat clean and reduce shedding. Trim nails as needed to prevent overgrowth and reduce the risk of scratches. At Conyers Animal Hospital, we offer nail trims—ask us for details at your next visit!
